FORWARD – Framework for a EU-wide Audiovisual Orphan Works Registry (2013-2016)

FORWARD is a three-years project (01/07/2013 – 30/06/2016) that aims at creating a EU wide, automated system to assess the right status for all types of audiovisual works, including orphans. It has been in initiated by ACE and is funded by the Community programme ICT-PSP as a Pilot B project under “Europeana  & Creativity”.

Overall Aim
  • Create an automated system to assess the rights status of AV works (public domain, in copyright, orphan)
  • Build up a registry of orphan films
 
Project goals
  • Simplify the search procedure for FHI by creating an automated system to assess the rights status of films
  • Harmonize rights status definitions across Europe
  • Analyse existing sources providing information about the rightsholder(s): FHI filmographic databases, producers, CMOs and distributors databases
  • Implement a system to search, harvest and process data
  • Establish a network of National Rights Clearance Centres  – FHIs
  • Ensure interoperability between FORWARD and ARROW
